Dealer Rule: No Second Card Until the Player Acts

The defining rule in European Blackjack is that the dealer does not take a second card immediately. Instead, the dealer’s second card is dealt only after the player completes all actions (hit, stand, split, or double). This differs from many other blackjack formats where the dealer gets two cards right away.

• If the dealer later reveals blackjack with the second card, insurance pays 2 to 1.

Special Split Rule for Aces

A split of Aces follows stricter rules. If the player splits two aces, each new hand receives only one additional card. No further hits are allowed after that one card per ace hand.

There’s also an important scoring detail: if a split ace hand forms 21 (Ace + 10-value card), it is not treated as blackjack. It counts only as a total of 21. A natural blackjack (from the first two cards without splitting) typically beats a 21 made after splitting.

A split-hand 21 is strong, but it usually doesn’t get the premium blackjack payout.

Doubling Down: Higher Risk for a Strong Position

Doubling down lets the player increase their main wager and commit to receiving only one more card. In this version, doubling is typically allowed when the player’s first two cards total 9, 10, or 11.

You can use Double on totals of 9, 10, or 11.

When the player chooses DOUBLE, the main bet is doubled and exactly one additional card is dealt. The hand then automatically stands. The same doubling option may also apply to split hands when the hand total is 9, 10, or 11.

Doubling down can be powerful because it increases profit on hands that already look favorable.

Why European Blackjack Plays Differently

Even with familiar rules, European Blackjack creates a distinct feel because of the dealer’s delayed second card. That single rule change affects the tension of the game and the way players perceive risk during splits and doubles.

The delayed dealer card makes splits and doubles feel more uncertain.

At the same time, the game remains approachable: you still aim to beat the dealer without going over 21, and you still make decisions based on your total versus the dealer’s upcard. The difference is that you’re often making those choices while the dealer’s full hand is still unknown.

European Blackjack is a simple variant on the surface, but its timing rules can change your comfort level with aggressive moves.
